Milestones
- The emergence of COFTU birthed a contradiction within the labour movement in Uganda. One group, mainly of conservatives, was comfortable with the status quo, and any change was a threat because it would lead to workers taking over the labour movement that had hitherto been hijacked by a small ‘elite club’ for personal interests. On the other hand, the founders of COFTU were convinced of the need for a fundamental change if the labour movement was to be of any value to the suffering workers.
- Additionally some within the labour movement viewed union positions as jobs, while the outlook in COFTU was that leadership was a calling and an opportunity to serve God in a ministry among the workers. Whereas trade unions were merely seen as meant to advance the narrow social and economic interests of workers, COFTU saw the need for the labour movement to do more than that, including having a mandate to unlock the potential of labour.
- So there was an inevitable conflict and struggle between these two contradicting tendencies. These contradictions were deeply entrenched, and much effort was necessary to achieve a meaningful breakthrough.
- Any breakthrough had to be achieved through revolutionary methods, a scientific leadership and a reliance on divine intervention characterized by total surrendering to God’s purposes for the labour and workers’ sphere in Uganda for this season and we as servant leaders functioning under His calling and anointing to overcome all resistance, internal strife, mediocrity and encumbrances to generate a team of values-based ‘no excuse’ leadership of integrity and exceptional skills; to establish a culture of discipline and disciplined thought; and to commence with the implementation of hedgehog concepts for the labour movement that we codenamed ‘flagship programmes for the Labour Movement under COFTU Unionism’.
- For us to change and challenge the foundations of the old labour movement, our values had to change, and so we had to move along 4 dimensions:
I. Totally surrendering to God’s purposes for the labour and workers’ sphere in Uganda and prayerfully functioning under His calling and anointing.
ii. Education, training, and mentorship to deal with the value base of the workers and labour union leaders.
iii. Deliberate change of the environment of our operations by strict adherence to timeless management principles.
iv. Meticulous and rigorous implementation of high-visibility and impact innovations.
